Galion fifth graders gearing up for yearlong fundraiser

September 5, 2017

The Galion City School District is barely a month in to the 2017-2018 school year and already community service is on the minds of students. The fifth-grade class at Galion Intermediate School is set to begin a yearlong campaign to help the residents of Signature Healthcare of Galion.

The campaign, which begins Friday, Sept. 8, involves students at the Intermediate School dressing down on select days for just 25 cents. Students can wear a shirt of their choice to school Sept. 8.

“After brainstorming many ideas, the fifth-grade students developed this project to help the residents at Signature in Galion,” said fifth grade teacher Paula Prince. “The students are very passionate about this project.”

The fundraising campaign will run throughout the 2017-2018 school year. Dates include: Sept. 8, Sept. 22, Oct. 6, Oct. 20, Nov. 3, Nov. 17, Dec. 1, Dec. 15, Jan. 5, Jan. 19, Feb. 2, Feb. 16, March 2, March 16, April 6 and April 20.

“All the proceeds raised will be used to purchase items for the residents of Signature Healthcare,” said Prince. “The items purchased will be donated twice during the school year, once in December and again in May.”

The students intend to purchase items such as word search puzzle books, Sudoku books, playing cards, blankets and other items that the residents may need.

“Our students continue to find new ways to make a positive impact on the Galion community,” said Galion Superintendent Jim Grubbs. “Our teachers and staff work hard to create learning environments that encourage our students to think of others, and I’m very proud of the work our fifth graders are going to do this year.”

Students will work with Mrs. Charlene Parkinson, the district’s treasurer, to total the funds raised each month and to prepare the funds for deposit in the bank.
