Our ROAR program at the Galion Intermediate School continues to use Active Floor educational games for academic support in Math and ELA (examples of educational games include grade level vocabulary words and meanings, verb tense matching games, math word problems and multiplication practices).
However, we also use Active Floor games for our weekly Playground Play sessions, especially during winter months when the weather might prevent our ROAR staff from taking our students out to our school playground. During those times, our students can still get some physical activity though Active Floor games such as Air Hockey, Soccer, Simon Says, Bike Race, and Splatter Space.

At January’s meeting, the Board of Education honored four students who have consistently demonstrated the Profile of a Tiger trait, Empathetic. Being empathetic is more than simply agreeing with someone—it’s about understanding and respecting their point of view, even if you don’t necessarily share it. It involves putting oneself in another person’s shoes to gain insight into their feelings and being supportive despite differences. These exemplary learners: Avery - 2nd grade; Rylee - 4th grade; Gavin - 6th grade and Sommar - 12th grade, were recognized for demonstrating this essential life skill! Good work, Tigers!

January kicks off School Board Appreciation Month! This month is an opportunity to recognize the important work our school board has done and will continue to do. President Grant Garverick, Vice President Mike Mateer, Laura Johnson, Dennis Long, and Melissa Miller—thank you for your commitment and dedication to our schools and students.

Over the summer, the GPS and GIS special education teams hosted a picnic for students and their families to enjoy the newly established inclusive playground. It is safe to say it was a hit!

In an effort to highlight the positive actions of our students, Galion Intermediate School teachers have been challenged to make 100 positive phone calls. Each time a positive phone call is made, they write their name on the grid. Once the grid is filled, the grade level teachers with the most squares will receive a free lunch!
The Board recognized four students who have consistently demonstrated the Profile of a Tiger trait, Involved, throughout the month of December. The Involved trait calls for students to display a passion for the community's success through active engagement in service opportunities and for them to seek ways to participate in school-related activities to develop a sense of Galion Pride. The students recognized are Korbin - Kindergarten; Paul - 5th grade; Rhiley - 8th grade and Wyatt - 11th grade. Way to go, Tigers!
The GIS Student Lighthouse Team hosted a holiday door decorating contest! Six local business owners judged the student-led design projects, offering the winning classroom a sweet surprise (a Jean's Day in January)!
Door Decorations were judged on multiple different criteria: creativity, incorporation of holiday themes, neatness of design and detail, evidence of time, effort, and teamwork, the use of a variety of elements and best use of space. There were many impressive designs; however, Mrs. Jaime Valentine's class took the win! Mrs. Laurie Smith's class won second place, and Mrs. Kim Garver's class placed third in the contest. Congratulations to all participants!
